Design Researcher (vendor)

Client:  Microsoft

Location:  Mountain View, CA

Start:  ASAP

Contract Length:  12 months+, possible to convert to FTE

Contract Type:  Vendor, V-dash 

Work Travel:  Less than 15%

Pay:  $ DOE

 

Want to join our UX team and be part of envisioning the future of productivity, communication and collaboration experiences?

 

As a Design Researcher, you’ll be a key contributor to the evolution of experience, web services, and our future vision for Communications and Collaboration experiences. The user experience research challenges will span envisioning creative solutions for both enterprise and consumers, working on designs that cross devices, screens and platforms, and envisioning UX for a very large base of existing users. You’ll be joining a group of UX professionals including Designers and Researchers. You will be an integral part of the engineering team and partner closely with Designers, Program managers and the Developers directly involved in creating and evolving user experiences.

 

You will share the responsibility for ensuring a successful and outstanding user experience for an entire product area and will be expected to

•             Bring in a wide range of both tested and innovative research methods to your work

•             Execute rapid iterative research including but not limited to RITE studies, competitive heuristic reviews, cognitive walkthroughs, to feed into a very agile product development cycle

•             Effectively and creatively communicate research and play a key role in both stimulating and iterating on designs for the product

•             Triangulate quantitative data from sources such as product instrumentation or large N surveys with qualitative research insights

•             Partner with your team in creating research plans and involve them in your research sessions to ensure its effectiveness

•             Develop research reports with clear and actionable recommendations

•             Share and evangelize results with Product and other UX team members

 

This position is based out of Mountain View. The candidate will be supporting both local initiatives and those that involve working with teams in Redmond. Travel to Redmond Headquarters is expected.

 

Requirements

•             Advanced degree in Psychology, Human Factors or related field preferable. Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Human Factors or related field with equivalent work experience as user experience researcher is acceptable

•             Formal training in user-centered design practices and both knowledge and experience with evaluative methodologies spanning lab studies, field research, and expert review.

•             Skilled in collecting, analyzing and presenting human behavioral data. Developing user experience frameworks based on this is a bonus.

•             A strong and demonstrable history of impact and influence on product experience designs, development team partners, and the process of user experience research.

•             Proven ability to work in fast paced, agile environments

•             Excellent verbal and written communication skills

•             Previous experience as Microsoft usability contractor or full time staff preferred

 

Notes from my meeting with the manager: 

  • ·         They would like to find an intermediate-level Researcher with around 4+ years of work experience. 
  • ·         Minimum is a Master’s degree in Psychology / Experimental Research or equivalent. 
  • ·         You will mainly be doing Qualitative Research and a little Quantitative. 
  • ·         He would like candidates to have experience with the following tools:  Morae, OVO, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Office, familiarity with CLOUD-based tools, and someone who has GREAT presentation skills. 
  • ·         The work will be a mixture of 40% Research and 60% Evangelizing. 
  • ·         The studies being run will include both quick pulse (RITE) studies and conventional (2-3 week studies). 
  • ·         There will be about 10-15% of travel and the locations would be Redmond, WA and other states for research. 
  • ·         This position will be managed to 40 hours per week, with some occasional work in the evenings. 
  • ·         The selling points of this role include:  you will work closely with Design and have a huge impact on it.  The team is focusing on consumer, mobile and planning to branch out to wearables.  It is a youthful group with a startup feel.  The entire team is about 100 people but there will only be two of you working out of the Mountain View office.
