    User Experience Researcher (contract)

    The product research team is looking for an enthusiastic and experienced User Experience Researcher with 2-3+ years of practical work experience. For this position, the person must be comfortable driving projects independently, scoping out research needs, providing detailed study plans, and proposing relevant (and sometimes unique) methodologies to answer research questions. The range of research for this position would include both hardware and software evaluative studies of products in the early stages of development (i.e. prototypes) all the way up to final product. Research would be conducted in both informal and formal lab settings, as well as field environments. Experience executing product benchmark studies and comparison studies is highly desired.

    Required skills:

    •           User study planning and execution: protocol design, recruiting, moderating, establishing key metrics, data collection and analysis, insight generation, report generation.
    •          Experience with a breadth of research methodologies and ability to come up with creative research solutions as needed.
    •           Qualitative evaluation and analysis
    •           Some quantitative analysis
    •           Video editing a plus
    •          Ability to manage a research project from start to finish


    In addition to executing research we are also looking for a candidate who can be a strong customer advocate, is passionate about user centered design, is capable of generating meaningful insight, is comfortable and adaptable to rapidly changing research needs, and has an ability to work well with others. Being able to visualize data in a concise and compelling way would be a plus, as well as the ability to synthesize research findings into best practices, and guidelines documents. Fundamental statistical experience is a plus.

    We are looking for a Contractor User Researcher with strong skills in experimental research design and experience translating user data into actionable product insights. The role primarily involves conducting customer site visits, and using Agile UR methodologies. User Researchers are responsible for the quality of the Windows product throughout the entire product cycle, beginning with gathering customer & competitive insight, translating those insights into design opportunities, then iterating and validating the product direction through research.

     

    Qualifications:

     

    - A minimum of an BSc. in Social, Cognitive, Behavioral or Experimental Psychology or equivalent industry experience.

    - Experience designing and running original experimental research

    - Ability to understand and articulate the underlying behavioral or cognitive cause for a usability issue with a product

    The Department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE) at the University of Washington invites applications for one full time (100% FTE) Lecturer or Senior Lecturer position.

    HCDE is in the process of expanding our programs at both the undergraduate and master’s levels. While we have need for expertise across all of our topics, we are seeking individuals with experience teaching ideation techniques, user-­centered design processes, interaction design, prototyping, user research methods, visual design, information visualization, and/or project-­based learning.

    The position requires a PhD or Masters degree in a field related to Human Centered Design or HCI, or significant work and/or teaching experience in the field of Human Centered Design or HCI. Preference will be given to candidates with a passion for and demonstrated excellence in teaching in the UX and HCI disciplines.

    We anticipate an initial 2-­3 year appointment period. Lecturers are reviewed for renewal at the end of each appointment period. This position is a 9­ month academic year appointment as a voting member of the HCDE faculty. The appointment will begin August 2016. The level of appointment and compensation will be commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications.
